Song of Songs 8

1 Oh that you were like a brother to me who nursed at my mother’s breasts! If I found you outside, I would kiss you, and none would despise me. 2 I would lead you and bring you into the house of my mother— she who used to teach me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the juice of my pomegranate. 3 His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me! 4 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.

5 Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved?

Under the apple tree I awakened you. There your mother was in labor with you; there she who bore you was in labor.

6 Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.

Sermon Recap

Pastor Josh wrapped up our two-part series on the Song of Songs by diving into the climactic conclusion of chapter 8. While Song of Songs is primarily a love poem celebrating intimacy and marriage, Pastor Josh framed Song of Songs 8:5-14 as wisdom literature that speaks directly to how we make life choices. He illustrated this through the iconic scene in Indiana Jones where characters must choose between different cups, noting that selecting the wrong shiny option leads to destruction. In the same way, the ultimate ending of this biblical song presents a dramatic call for us to choose wisdom over cheap substitutes.

Walking through Song of Songs 8:5-7, Pastor Josh highlighted the unique power of God-given love, where the bride asks her beloved to set her as a seal upon his heart and arm. This seal signifies exclusive possession, signaling that their commitment is permanent and unyielding. The text describes love as strong as death and its passion as the very flame of the Lord that many waters cannot quench. True love cannot be bought with all the wealth in the world, and Pastor Josh reminded us that unless our human love is empowered and inflamed by the fear of the Lord, our capacity to love will quickly hit its natural limits.

Moving to Song of Songs 8:8-12, Pastor Josh examined the community's desire to protect their younger sister until she matures, and the bride's firm response that she maintained her defenses like a wall until finding true peace with her groom. A major tension emerges when comparing the bride's humble vineyard to King Solomon's vast commercial holdings. Even though Solomon possessed immense wealth, power, and hundreds of wives, the bride rejected his offer in favor of her own vineyard and true beloved. She refused to trade genuine, covenantal love for Solomon's transactional lifestyle, choosing the hard road of wisdom over superficial gain.

Ultimately, Pastor Josh challenged us to move past the anxiety of simply making right or wrong choices and instead cultivate a heart posture that actively chooses God's wisdom. Drawing from Deuteronomy 30 and Proverbs 3, he pointed out that Christ Himself is the ultimate wisdom of God, and choosing Him leads directly to true life. Rather than begrudgingly following God's commands, Pastor Josh encouraged us to delight in God's wisdom, as spiritual joy helps defend our hearts against worldly temptations. When we rely on the Lord rather than our own understanding, we discover the full, fiery love that God designed us to enjoy.
